The year is 1986. You are an astronomer with your latest project's funding cut you've just been thrust into a system administration role. You are Clifford Stoll as he tracks down a hacker as detailed in his book The Cuckoo's Egg: The Maze of Computer Espionage.

This project was created for the Linux Game Jam 2023. Donating to this project is entirely optional but will tell me that "yes, this is the right path and style. Please make more of this."

Although I aimed to remain faithful to the conditions of 1986, I found certain aspects of BSD 4.2 to be cumbersome for a video game. Therefore, I have introduced some enhancements, such as partial autocomplete exclusively for commands (excluding files), the ability to recall command history using arrow keys, and a reduction in the complexity of the file system. It is important to note that this is not a completely identical recreation but rather an improved adaptation.

INSTALL INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Extract the zip entirely.
  2. Run the executable for your OS.

HOW TO PLAY

Treat it like a console. Run the "mail" command and it will step you through the game. You might get stuck in the second step of the game. Remember that log paths changed throughout time and that logs might be located under a different user.
